Teen Drinking...Is...Very Bad

Ahhh...college. A place where young people discover themselves. A time of meeting new people, trying new things, parties filled with naked girls on stripper poles, in-ground pools filled with jello, and no cops. Yeah...a few of those things don't sound right to me either.

However, that's exactly how college is depicted in films, especially in teen comedies like Superbad, Van Wilder, and Old School. Now, these films may not always be set on college campuses. Sometimes, they are set on High School Campuses, which is even worse.

Teen drinking and partying is become commonplace all over America. And movies like this are one of the reasons why. Teen comedies are great at amplifying how awesome it is to get drunk. In the movies, it always leads to crazy adventures, hook-ups with girls who are completely out of your league, and maybe a fight or two. However, there are a few aspects of the teen drinking experience these movies fail to mention.

First and foremost, these movies always seem to forget about the police. Most characters in teen comedies are underage and breaking the law everytime they drink. Chances are, if you are at a movie version of a college party, it's gonna get loud and rowdy and the cops WILL show up. And they will not hesitate to ruin your night and give you a ticket, or, even worse, toss you in the back of a policecar and haul you to jail. And that's just the beginning of your worries. Next comes the fines. And the probation. And the community service. And the alcohol education classes. And the...well you get the idea.

But that's not how it goes in the movies. The cops come in, screw with the kids, crack a few jokes, have a few beers, and go on their merry little way. No one ever gets arrested.

Another thing that gets reduced in teen comedies is the effects of alcohol. No one ever dies from alcohol poisoning in the movies. No one ever throws up everywhere (unless it's in a comedic way, which is never the case in real life).

As you can see, the effects of alcohol and the consequences of drinking it illegally are greatly reduced in teen comedies, while the fun times and carefree-ness of drinking are greatly amplified.
