Today there was a rumor that the great Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan died today due to a heart attack. I saw it on my twitter timeline this morning with people asking if he really did die. I was convinced for about 2 hours that Jackie Chan was dead. If I did not have a twitter account or Facebook, I never would have heard this rumor. Rumors can start so easily on the internet and can spread like wild fire. Jackie Chan did not die today; he was just the victim of an online death hoax. The sad thing is that the Twitter trend is still ranked high as people still believe that Chan died.
Earlier, 'RIP Jackie Chan' topped Twitter's trending topics leading to the response on Chan's Facebook, dismissing the rumor. According to a news report done by skynews.com "Jackie is alive and well. He did not suffer a heart attack and die, as was reported on many social networking sites and in online news reports. Jackie is fine and is busy preparing for the filming of his next movie."
I think it’s amazing to me how someone can start a rumor by simply typing it in on his or her twitter account for everyone to see. It is even more amazing that people believe everything they see on the Internet. Someone dying is no joking matter, and people were already cracking jokes about Jackie Chan on the twitter trending topic, #jackiechan.
Fortunately, Jackie Chan is not dead, and we can continue watching his awesome kung fu moves.
